Kitchen pods explained: prefab units, and the other kind

“Kitchen pod” means two completely different things depending on who is saying it, and the two audiences almost never meet.

To a builder, a kitchen pod is a prefabricated kitchen module: a complete unit — cabinetry, benchtop, plumbing, appliances — assembled in a factory and craned into an apartment or hotel room during construction. It saves weeks of trade sequencing on site. It lives indoors, and you will never buy one.

To everyone else searching the term in Australia, a kitchen pod is what we make: a self-contained outdoor kitchen that arrives finished and is craned into the garden.

Why the same words

Both are modular. Both are built in a factory rather than assembled on site. Both get lifted into position by a crane. The logic that produced the word is the same in each case — a complete, serviced kitchen unit delivered as one object instead of built piece by piece.

The difference is where it ends up and who it is for. One is a construction product sold to developers by the hundred. The other is a consumer product that sits in your backyard.

What an outdoor kitchen pod contains

Everything you would otherwise buy, install and connect separately:

  • A four-burner gas barbecue, built in flush to the cabinetry
  • A Linärie range hood over the cooking bay
  • A beverage cabinet with a glass door
  • A stainless sink with a pull-out tap
  • A bar station with a lit bottle shelf and a fold-down serving shelf
  • A television at bench height, a projector and a retractable screen, and built-in speakers
  • An illuminated dartboard alcove with closed storage beneath
  • A motorised lift-up canopy with perimeter LED lighting

The frame is high-strength galvanised steel. The cabinet, the inner walls and the 5 mm benchtop are SUS304 stainless — commercial-kitchen grade, chosen because this one lives outside all year.

The part that decides the project

Not the specification. The access.

A pod is craned in, which means overhead clearance and a path wide enough for the crate. It needs a level slab, a gas connection, water and power, all of which your own licensed trades connect once it is in position. The side gate stops more projects than the budget does, which is why our site requirements page exists and why it is worth reading before you choose a size.

Three lengths, two finishes

Every length carries the same core — the barbecue, the range hood, the beverage cabinet, the sink and the projector screen. The equipment then grows with the length:

  • OLEA 24 — 2,424 mm long
  • OLEA 36 — 3,158 mm long
  • OLEA 38 — 3,882 mm long

All three are 958 mm deep and 2,360 mm high. Grey pairs dark cabinetry with timber; Black drops the timber entirely. Both finishes cost the same.

So which did you mean

If you are fitting out apartments, you want a modular kitchen manufacturer, and nothing here competes with that.

If you are tired of a barbecue on a paver next to a bar fridge on an extension lead, that is the other kind of kitchen pod. The same confusion happens with the term garden pods, which in Australia usually means an insulated garden room rather than anything you cook in.
